Early Life and Theatre Career

Born and raised in Adelaide, David Campbell developed a passion for performing arts at an early age. Initially pursuing acting, he was already performing with the Sydney Theatre Company and appearing at the Sydney Opera House by the age of 22.

In 1997, David starred in a major Australian revival of Les Misérables, helping establish his reputation as a leading musical theatre performer.

Soon after, David Campbell moved to New York where his cabaret performances generated significant industry attention. His downtown cabaret show became one of the city’s most talked-about productions, with Time Out New York describing the excitement surrounding him as “the biggest buzz since Barbra Streisand.”

This success led to David becoming the youngest performer ever to headline the famous Rainbow & Stars cabaret venue in New York.

His album David Campbell On Broadway featured interpretations of famous musical theatre songs from productions including Les Misérables, Chicago, Oklahoma!, Hello, Dolly!, and On The Town.

David later released the highly successful Swing Sessions albums, which became a national phenomenon and the highest-selling albums of his career.

The original Swing Sessions album sold more than 120,000 copies in Australia and inspired hugely successful national concert tours featuring David and his big band performing classic swing standards to sold-out audiences across the country.

Swing Sessions and Live Touring

David Campbell’s Swing Sessions tours became one of Australia’s most successful live music productions, with audiences embracing his energetic performances and classic swing repertoire.

Songs including One For My Baby, Just A Gigolo/I Ain’t Nobody, Begin The Beguine, Route 66, and That Old Black Magic became crowd favourites during live performances.

Inspired by legendary entertainers such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, and Sammy Davis Jr, David Campbell developed a relaxed and authentic swing style that connected strongly with audiences.

David Campbell later expanded his career into creative leadership and production.

He was appointed Artistic Director of the Adelaide Cabaret Festival, recognised as the world’s largest cabaret festival, where he played an important role in supporting live performance and Australian entertainment.
