Garry Lyon Biography
Early Life and AFL Career
Garry Lyon is a former Australian rules footballer, AFL commentator and media personality best known for his outstanding career with the Melbourne Football Club. Born in Devonport, Tasmania, Garry Lyon is the son of former Hawthorn player Peter Lyon. He later attended Melbourne High School before being recruited from Kyabram to play in the AFL.
Garry Lyon made his AFL debut with the Melbourne Football Club in 1986 and quickly established himself as one of the competition’s elite key forwards. He played in Melbourne’s 1988 AFL Grand Final side and earned a reputation as a courageous and highly skilled player.
In 1990, Garry Lyon won his first Melbourne best and fairest award, recognising his importance to the club. The following year, he became captain of Melbourne and eventually became the club’s longest-serving captain at the time. Lyon was admired for playing through ongoing back injuries and was considered an inspirational leader by teammates and supporters alike.
AFL Achievements and Injuries
Throughout his AFL career, Garry Lyon achieved numerous honours and accolades. He won two Melbourne Football Club best and fairest awards and was selected in three All-Australian teams, cementing his status as one of the best players of his era.
A serious broken leg injury in 1987 prematurely ended one of his early seasons, with footage of the incident frequently replayed on The AFL Footy Show. Despite battling persistent back injuries for much of his career, Lyon continued to perform at a high level.
Garry Lyon retired from AFL football in 1999 due to worsening back problems. He finished his career with 226 AFL games and 426 goals, placing him among Melbourne Football Club’s greatest goal kickers.
Garry Lyon Media Career
Following his retirement from professional football, Garry Lyon built a highly successful media career across radio, television and print journalism.
His radio career began in the late 1990s with 3AW before he moved to SEN 1116 in 2004 to host Morning Glory. In 2005, Lyon returned to 3AW where he appeared on Sports Today and provided special comments for AFL broadcasts.
In 2007, Garry Lyon joined Triple M and became co-host of The Friday Night Rub alongside James Brayshaw. The program became one of Australia’s most popular AFL radio shows.
Television Career
Garry Lyon also became a prominent television personality during and after his AFL career. He became a regular panelist on The AFL Footy Show while still playing and later took over hosting duties in 2006 alongside James Brayshaw after Eddie McGuire became CEO of the Nine Network.
Prior to hosting The AFL Footy Show, Lyon worked with Brayshaw on The Sunday Footy Show and Any Given Sunday. He also contributed to Nine Network’s coverage of the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games.
In 2007, Garry Lyon joined the panel of Footy Classified, further strengthening his reputation as one of Australia’s leading AFL commentators and analysts.
Writing and Personal Life
In addition to his media work, Garry Lyon has worked as a columnist for The Age newspaper. He has also co-authored several children’s books, including titles in the popular Specky Magee series alongside author Felice Arena.
In February 2016, Garry Lyon stepped away from his television, radio and newspaper commitments due to a reported mental health condition.
Coaching Career
Since retiring from AFL football, Garry Lyon has also explored coaching opportunities. He coached the Australian International Rules football team beginning in 2001 and remained in the role for four consecutive seasons before being replaced by Kevin Sheedy.
Although frequently linked to senior coaching roles at the Melbourne Football Club, Garry Lyon has stated he does not intend to return to senior AFL coaching.
In 2009, he coached the Victorian Under-16 representative side at the AFL Championships, continuing his involvement in developing young football talent.
