Early Life and Family Background
Born in Adelaide, South Australia, Hugh Sheridan is the second youngest of seven children. Growing up in a musical family, Hugh developed a passion for the performing arts at an early age. His father, Denis Sheridan, was a respected jazz musician who helped nurture Hugh’s love of music and entertainment.
At just five years old, Hugh began acting classes at the Unley Youth Theatre, where he would later become a patron. It was here that his passion for storytelling and performance first emerged. Throughout his childhood and teenage years, Hugh actively participated in community theatre productions, school performances, and theatre companies across South Australia.
Dance and Performing Arts Education
At the age of 16, Hugh Sheridan was encouraged by his parents to study dance as a way of complementing his interests in music and drama. His dance teacher, Terry Simpson, suggested he audition for the prestigious Australian Ballet School, believing the experience would help prepare him for future performing arts opportunities.
To the surprise of both Hugh and his family, he was accepted into the Advanced Diploma in Dance program at the Australian Ballet School. He subsequently moved to Melbourne to pursue his studies while also undertaking part-time opera training at the Victorian College of the Arts under renowned teacher Monique Brunelle.
During his studies, Hugh worked with some of the world’s leading ballet companies, including The Australian Ballet, The English National Ballet, and The Paris Opera Ballet, gaining invaluable experience in professional performance.
National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA)
At just 18 years of age, Hugh Sheridan was accepted into the Bachelor of Arts (Acting) program at the National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney, one of Australia’s most prestigious acting schools.
While studying at NIDA, Hugh appeared in several stage productions, including The Lost Echo for the Sydney Theatre Company. His training and performance experience helped establish the foundation for a successful career in television and theatre.
Packed to the Rafters Success
Immediately after graduating from NIDA, Hugh Sheridan landed the role of Ben Rafter in Packed to the Rafters, one of Australia’s highest-rating family drama series.
His portrayal of the lovable and charismatic Ben Rafter quickly made him a fan favourite and earned widespread industry recognition. Throughout his time on the show, Hugh received numerous award nominations and accolades, including:
