Nathan Buckley
Nathan Buckley is one of the most respected figures in Australian Rules Football, known for his outstanding playing career, successful coaching tenure and contributions as a media commentator. Early Life and Football Background
Nathan Buckley was born on 26 July 1972 in Adelaide, South Australia. During his childhood, his family travelled extensively throughout Australia, allowing him to experience life in many different regions. By the age of 12, he had lived in or visited every major mainland Australian state.
Although he grew up supporting the Melbourne Football Club, Buckley spent much of his formative football years in the Northern Territory. His development as a young footballer in the Territory led many to regard him as a Northern Territory football product. He also spent a season playing for Ainslie Football Club in the Canberra-based ACTAFL competition.
During the State of Origin era, Buckley represented teams linked to the Northern Territory, including the combined Queensland/Northern Territory side and The Allies, which featured players from Queensland, New South Wales, Tasmania, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory.
Coaching Career at Collingwood
After establishing himself as one of the AFL’s greatest players, Nathan Buckley transitioned into coaching with the Collingwood Football Club.
Following months of speculation, Buckley signed a five-year coaching succession plan with Collingwood. He served as assistant coach during the 2010 and 2011 AFL seasons before taking over from Mick Malthouse as senior coach in 2012.
His first season as head coach saw Collingwood recover from an inconsistent start to finish fourth on the AFL ladder with a 16-win, 6-loss record. The Magpies progressed to the Preliminary Final before being eliminated by the eventual premiers, Sydney.

The 2015 season began positively, with Collingwood recording several strong performances, including a memorable ANZAC Day victory over Essendon during the centenary commemorations of the Gallipoli landing.

Alongside his coaching and football commitments, Nathan Buckley has enjoyed a successful media career. He has appeared regularly as a panellist on The AFL Footy Show, where his football knowledge and analysis made him a popular contributor.
Buckley also featured prominently in advertising campaigns, including serving as the face of wireless broadband provider Unwired.
In 2008, he joined the Seven Network as an AFL commentator, providing expert analysis and match commentary throughout the AFL season. His broadcasting work continued into 2009 and further strengthened his profile within Australian sport.
