Stephen Quartermain
Career with Network Ten
In December 1984, Stephen Quartermain joined Network Ten and quickly became one of Australia’s most recognised sports broadcasters. Throughout the 1980s, he covered major international sporting events including the Seoul Olympics, Wimbledon, The Ashes, and the World Gymnastics Championships. During this time, he was also a prominent member of the network’s Eyewitness News team.
Sports Broadcasting and Major Events
In 1991, Stephen Quartermain became the host of the sports program Sportsweek. His sports reporting career continued to expand as he covered numerous major events, including the Commonwealth Games, the Sydney Olympics, and a variety of elite sporting competitions. His coverage included AFL, Rugby League, Basketball, and Swimming, helping establish him as one of Australia’s leading sports presenters.
AFL Commentary and Television Appearances
From 1998 to 2004, Stephen Quartermain regularly appeared on the popular television program The Panel, where he provided sports reports and commentary. When Network Ten secured AFL broadcasting rights in 2002, he became one of the network’s key commentators for Australian Football League matches.
Beginning in the 2009 AFL season, Stephen Quartermain co-hosted the football discussion program One Week at a Time alongside Robert Walls on Network Ten’s HD channel, One. Throughout his AFL broadcasting career, he hosted five Brownlow Medal presentations and called eight AFL Grand Finals before Network Ten lost the AFL rights at the conclusion of the 2011 season.
News Presenting Career
Following the loss of AFL broadcasting rights, Stephen Quartermain remained with Network Ten as the weekday sports presenter for the Ten Eyewitness News bulletin in Melbourne.
In 2013, he expanded his role by becoming the Friday presenter of Ten Eyewitness News after veteran newsreader Mal Walden reduced his on-air commitments. Later that year, in December 2013, Stephen Quartermain succeeded Walden as the full-time presenter of Ten Eyewitness News Melbourne, becoming one of the network’s leading news personalities.
Other Television Roles and Honours
In addition to his sports and news presenting duties, Stephen Quartermain occasionally served as a fill-in host on 9am with David and Kim.
His contribution to Australian sports journalism has been recognised through several prestigious honours. Stephen Quartermain is a member of the MCG Media Hall of Fame and holds life membership with the Australian Football Media Association, reflecting his long-standing influence on Australian sports broadcasting.
