Formation of Rogue Traders
Rogue Traders were formed in Melbourne in 2002 by musician, producer and DJ James Ash and drummer Peter Wilson.
James Ash had already established himself within Australia’s electronic music scene before forming Rogue Traders. His production and DJ background became an important part of the band’s distinctive sound, combining electronic beats and samples with live instrumentation and pop songwriting.
The group’s early recordings attracted attention within Australia’s dance music scene and established the musical direction that would eventually lead to mainstream success.
Early Music and “Voodoo Child”
Rogue Traders released their debut album, We Know What You’re Up To, in 2003. The album introduced their combination of electronic music, rock and dance-pop to Australian audiences.
One of the band’s early breakthrough songs was “Voodoo Child”, which became a major Australian club and radio hit. The song demonstrated the group’s ability to combine electronic production with memorable pop songwriting.
“Voodoo Child” also earned Rogue Traders an ARIA Award nomination for Producer of the Year in 2005, recognising the production work of James Ash.
