David King
Former AFL Player, Premiership Star and Football Commentator
David King is a former Australian Rules footballer, AFL premiership player, coach, and respected football commentator. Best known for his successful career with the North Melbourne Football Club, David King became one of the AFL’s most consistent and hard-working players during the 1990s and early 2000s.
Following his retirement from professional football, David King successfully transitioned into coaching and sports media, becoming one of Australia’s most recognised AFL analysts and commentators.
AFL Playing Career
David King made his AFL debut for the North Melbourne Football Club in 1994 after being recruited from Port Melbourne Football Club at the age of 22.
Over the course of his impressive AFL career, King played 241 games and kicked 145 goals for the Kangaroos. He played an important role in North Melbourne’s success during one of the club’s strongest eras, helping secure AFL premiership victories in both 1996 and 1999.
Known for his versatility, endurance, and leadership, David King became a highly respected player across the league.
State of Origin and AFL Achievements
David King proudly represented Victoria in State of Origin football on multiple occasions, including during the 1998 representative season.
He also holds a remarkable VFL/AFL record for appearing in Preliminary Finals for seven consecutive seasons from his debut year in 1994 through to 2000.
Throughout his career, King earned significant recognition for his performances, including selection as an AFL All-Australian player on two occasions.
David King retired from AFL football at the conclusion of the 2004 season after establishing himself as one of North Melbourne’s most dependable players of his era.

After retiring as a player, David King moved into coaching and joined the Richmond Football Club in 2005 as an assistant coach.
