Eddie McGuire Biography
Eddie McGuire is an Australian television presenter, sports broadcaster, and media executive best known for his work in AFL coverage and Australian entertainment television.
Early life and media career
Eddie McGuire grew up in Broadmeadows, Melbourne. He and his brother Frank McGuire both attended Christian Brothers’ College in St Kilda after winning scholarships. Frank, a sports journalist, helped Eddie secure his first media role as a statistics assistant and cricket reporter for The Herald (1978–1982).
He later worked as a cadet sports reporter at Network Ten before joining the Nine Network in 1993, where he began building his profile as a sports and television personality.
Rise in television hosting
McGuire became widely known in 1994 as host of The Footy Show, a role he held until 2005. He also became one of Australia’s most recognisable game show hosts when he fronted Who Wants to Be a Millionaire from 1999 to 2006, briefly returning in 2007.
He further expanded his television presence by hosting the Logie Awards (2003–2005) and the Sydney New Year’s Eve telecast (1999–2000).
AFL media and broadcasting work
Alongside television hosting, McGuire worked in AFL radio commentary with Triple M and contributed football columns for the Herald Sun. He became one of the most prominent voices in Australian sports media during this period.
Collingwood Football Club presidency
In 1998, McGuire was elected president of the Collingwood Football Club. During his leadership, the club experienced significant success, including consecutive AFL Grand Final appearances in 2002 and 2003.
Collingwood later won the 2010 AFL Grand Final replay against St Kilda during his presidency, marking a major milestone for the club.
Executive role at the Nine Network
In 2006, McGuire was appointed CEO of the Nine Network. His tenure required him to step away from on-air roles, including The Footy Show and Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
His time as CEO included major restructuring and cost-cutting measures before he resigned from the role in 2007.
Return to television hosting
After stepping down as CEO, McGuire returned to television presenting. He hosted programs including 1 vs. 100, A Current Affair (temporary host), and several national telethons supporting disaster relief efforts.
From 2009, he became the host of Millionaire Hot Seat, one of Australia’s longest-running weekday game shows.
He also hosted other short-lived programs including The Million Dollar Drop, Between the Lines, and This is Your Life.
Sports broadcasting and Fox Footy
McGuire joined Fox Footy in 2012 as an AFL commentator and panel member while continuing his hosting duties on the Nine Network. He also contributed to Olympic coverage and sports programming across Australian television.
London Olympics coverage
During the 2012 London Olympics, McGuire broadcast from London for radio and television coverage. His commentary of the opening ceremony attracted public criticism due to on-air mistakes and inaccuracies.
