Jimmy Bartel
Early Life and Junior Football Career
Jimmy Bartel began his junior football career in Bell Park before attending St Joseph’s College, where his sporting talent quickly became evident. Initially showing strong promise as a cricketer, he represented the school’s 1st XI cricket team as a 16-year-old and won batting awards in both 2000 and 2001. His performances earned selection in the Victorian under-17 cricket team.
Bartel later shifted his focus to Australian rules football, joining the Geelong Falcons in the TAC Cup competition. Despite being ineligible for the 2000 AFL Draft as a bottom-aged player, he earned widespread recognition through outstanding performances in the AFL Under 18 Championships, where he represented Victoria Country and won the team’s Most Valuable Player award. He also received All-Australian honours, was named in the TAC Cup Team of the Year, and helped the Geelong Falcons win a TAC Cup premiership. At just 16, he also won his club’s best and fairest award.
In his second year with the Falcons, Bartel was appointed captain and again represented Victoria Country at state level, earning All-Australian selection for a second consecutive year.
AFL Draft and Early Career (2002–2006)
Jimmy Bartel was selected by the Geelong Football Club with the eighth overall pick in the 2001 AFL Draft. He made his AFL debut in 2002 and played 11 senior games in his debut season. His strong early performances earned him an AFL Rising Star nomination after a standout game in Round 4.
Later in 2002, Bartel played a key role in Geelong’s VFL premiership win, helping the club secure its first major silverware since 1982.
In 2003, he struggled for consistent senior selection, playing 13 games, but improved significantly in 2004 after returning from the VFL. He became an important part of Geelong’s midfield, averaging strong disposal and tackling numbers and finishing highly in the Brownlow Medal count for the club.
By 2005, Bartel had established himself as a tough and reliable midfielder, helping Geelong reach the finals and earning recognition for his courageous playing style.
Rise to Elite Midfielder and Premiership Success (2007–2011)
The 2007 AFL season marked Bartel’s emergence as one of the league’s elite midfielders. He averaged over 27 disposals per game and ranked among the top players in multiple statistical categories, including disposals and tackles.
Bartel won the 2007 Brownlow Medal, polling 29 votes, and also helped Geelong secure the AFL premiership. In the Grand Final, he delivered a dominant performance with 28 disposals and two goals in a record-breaking victory over Port Adelaide.
In 2008, he maintained elite form, earning All-Australian selection again and recording a career-high 41 disposals in a match against Adelaide. Geelong reached another Grand Final but were defeated by Hawthorn.
In 2009, Bartel celebrated his 150th game and 100th win, played a key role in Geelong’s finals campaign, and won his second premiership. His Grand Final performance included a record-equalling 16 tackles.
In 2010, he continued consistent elite output as Geelong again reached the finals but fell short in the preliminary final.
The 2011 season became a career highlight, with Bartel winning the Norm Smith Medal in Geelong’s Grand Final victory over Collingwood. He collected 26 disposals and kicked three goals, securing his third premiership.
Changing Role and Continued Performance (2012–2015)
In 2012, Bartel played much of the season with a foot injury but still maintained strong disposal numbers. Geelong reached the finals but were eliminated in the first week.
In 2013, he transitioned into a more defensive role across half-back while still producing consistent high disposal counts. He played in all 24 games and became Geelong’s record holder for finals appearances at the time.
The 2014 season saw Bartel reach his 250th AFL game, where he delivered a standout performance including four goals. He finished as Geelong’s second-highest goal kicker that season and remained a consistent contributor in finals.
In 2015, injuries limited him to 11 games, including a serious knee injury. Despite this, he returned strongly later in the season, highlighted by a 41-disposal performance against North Melbourne.
Final Season and Retirement (2016)
In 2016, Geelong underwent a generational list transition. Bartel remained part of the team on a one-year contract extension.
He played his 300th AFL game in Round 19, recording 25 disposals and a goal in a win over the Western Bulldogs. At the end of the season, Jimmy Bartel announced his retirement from the AFL, concluding an outstanding career with Geelong Football Club.
