Peter Helliar’s Career in Australian Comedy
Peter Helliar is one of Australia’s most successful comedians, television presenters, writers and actors. Known for his quick wit and engaging stage presence, he has enjoyed a long career in Australian entertainment, spanning television, radio, stand-up comedy, film and writing.
Peter first gained national attention in 1999 when he joined Rove McManus on the original Rove television series on the Nine Network. When the program moved to Network Ten in 2000, Helliar remained a key member of the cast and became an integral part of the Logie Award-winning variety show. He continued with the program until its conclusion in 2009 after a decade on Australian television.

In 2003, Peter Helliar became involved in Australian Rules Football entertainment through After The Game, which evolved into the popular AFL program Before The Game in 2004.
During this period, he created one of his most memorable comedy characters, Bryan Strauchan, a fictional Collingwood Football Club rookie who quickly became a fan favourite. Known affectionately as “Strauchanie,” the character became a cultural phenomenon within the AFL community.
Bryan Strauchan received the AFL Personality of the Year Award, participated in the AFL Grand Final Parade, appeared on an official AFL Footy Card and was awarded Best on Ground at the 2009 EJ Whitten Legends Game.
Peter Helliar’s Film Career
Following the conclusion of Rove, Peter Helliar turned his attention to film projects and screenwriting. His work culminated in the release of his first feature film, I Love You Too, in 2010.
The romantic comedy starred Brendan Cowell, Peter Dinklage, Yvonne Strahovski and Megan Gale and was produced by Laura Waters, known for her work on Summer Heights High. The film showcased Helliar’s abilities as a writer and further expanded his career beyond stand-up comedy and television.
