Tracey Spicer
Tracey Spicer is an Australian journalist, television presenter, author, and media commentator known for her work in news broadcasting, advocacy, and media commentary across major Australian networks.
Early broadcasting career
Spicer began her journalism career at Macquarie National News, providing reports to Brisbane radio station 4BH. She later moved to Melbourne’s 3AW, where she worked as a morning news editor.
She transitioned into television, working across Southern Cross Television and the Nine Network before joining Network Ten in Melbourne as a local correspondent. She later became co-host of First at Five News in Brisbane.
Network Ten and national news presenting
In 1995, Spicer relocated to Sydney to present Network Ten’s national weekend news bulletins and late-night news. She remained in this role until the program was discontinued in 2005, continuing with Network Ten until the end of 2006.
Departure from Network Ten
After 14 years with Network Ten, Spicer was dismissed in late 2006 following her return from maternity leave. She alleged workplace discrimination related to pregnancy and career treatment, which attracted significant media attention.
Network Ten denied the allegations, attributing the decision to restructuring and cost-cutting within the news division. The matter was ultimately settled outside of court. Her final broadcast was on New Year’s Eve 2006.
Sky News Australia and broadcasting work
Shortly after leaving Network Ten, Spicer joined Sky News Australia, where she worked as a presenter until 2015.
Writing and media commentary
Spicer has contributed to several publications as a columnist and writer, including:
- Traveller Magazine (Mama Holiday column)
- The Hoopla (opinion columnist, 2011–2015)
- Holiday with Kids Magazine (travel writer and ambassador, 2009–2014)
- Daily Telegraph (columnist)
She has also been an occasional contributor to ABC TV’s The Drum since 2015.
Media business and freelance work
Spicer currently works as a freelance journalist, speaker, media trainer, and broadcaster through her media companies Spicer Communications and Outspoken Women.
Documentary and advocacy work
Spicer has produced documentary content in collaboration with organisations including World Wildlife Fund and World Vision, focusing on the experiences of women in countries such as Bangladesh, Kenya, Uganda, Papua New Guinea, and India.
Investigative journalism and awards
In 2018, Spicer, along with Lorna Knowles, Kate McClymont, Alison Branley, and Joanne Puccini, was nominated for a Mid-Year Walkley Award in Women’s Leadership in Media for their investigative reporting into allegations involving Don Burke.
